  1. Connecticut DEP Report Shows Urgent Need to Increase Recycling

    The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection issued an ambitious new Solid Waste Plan on Dec. 20 that seeks to reduce municipal waste disposal by greatly expanding recycling and waste reduction. Currently the state generates 3.8 million tons of waste annually of which 57% is burned in one of six regional resource recovery facilities, 30% is recycled, 4% landfilled in state and 9% (or 400,000 tons) is exported to landfills in Pennsylvania and Ohio. However, the DEP projects that waste generation will increase to 5.2 million tons of waste or 1.42 tons per person annually by 2024.   2. Former Senator, Governor and Environmental Champion Robert Stafford Dies

    Former Senator Robert T. Stafford, a leading advocate for the environment and education, died on December 23rd. He was 93. His public life spanned more than a half century where he spent 2 years as a governor, 11 years in the House and 17 in the Senate before retiring in 1989. As a member of the Senate, Stafford championed numerous environmental initiatives, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act. When Ronald Reagan became president and the Republicans took control of the Senate, Stafford ascended to chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee where he successfully opposed Reagan's efforts to turn back the environmental gains of the previous decade...Read More »

  3. Covanta is Expanding its Hillsborough County, Florida Facility

    Covanta Energy Corporation, a subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation (NYSE: CVA) announced that Hillsborough County has authorized their plans to design and construct a 50 percent capacity expansion of the Hillsborough County Waste-to-Energy Facility located near Brandon, FL. This will increase daily throughput by 600 tons per day from 1,200 TPD to 1,800 TPD once the project is complete.   4. Waste Services Completes Florida Acquisitions

    Waste Services, Inc. (Nasdaq: WSII) said that it has completed the acquisition of the SLD C&D landfill in Charlotte County, Florida and the Pro Disposal roll-off collection and transfer business, with operations in Collier and Lee Counties.   5. Plasma Environmental Calls Off Acquistion of Zero Waste Energy

    The previously announced proposed acquisition of Zero Waste Energy Systems by Plasma Environmental Technologies Inc. (TSXV: PE) was terminated after Zero Waste failed to meet financial targets set for the deal in August. Plasma Environmental said that it was by mutual agreement and that Zero Waste had agreed to pay all out-of-pocket costs arising from the process.   6. American Ecology Declares a $0.15 per Share Dividend

    Hazardous and special waste services provider American Ecology Corporation (NASDAQ: ECOL) announced a quarterly cash dividend of $0.15 per share. In September, the company reported about 18 million shares outstanding and $11 million in cash and short term investments.
