  1. Judge Strikes Down Measure To Block San Diego County Landfill

    A judge has ordered that a measure intended to stop the development of a San Diego County landfill be removed from the November ballot. The superior court judge determined that errors and inaccuracies in the petitions that qualified the initiative for the ballot raised questions over whether the voters actually knew what they were signing. The measure sought to overturn a 1994 initiative approved by county voters that permitted the development of the landfill in Gregory Canyon.   2. WCA Waste Acquires Blount Recycling

    WCA Waste Corporation (Nasdaq: WCAA) has completed the acquisition of Blount Recycling, L.L.C., including a landfill, three collection companies and two transfer facilities. The 240-acre landfill, with an estimated 28 years of capacity remaining, is located 20 miles north of Birmingham in Trafford, Alabama.   3. Dell Announces 20 Computer Collection Grant Winners

    Dell Inc. has announced twenty grant winners whose $10,000 awards will be used to conduct computer collection events. The grant winners, selected from 175 applicants, include state and local governments, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations, and include Goodwill Southern California, Keep Mobile (Ala.) Beautiful Inc., the city of Indianapolis Department of Public Works, Johns Hopkins University's Recycling Program, and the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation.   4. New York Health Department (Considers HazWaste Landfill Expansion

    The Niagara County (N.Y.) Legislature has asked the state to conduct a full environmental impact assessment before CWM Chemical Services (www.wm.com) can expand its hazardous waste landfill in Lewiston. CWM has asked the state Health Department (www.health.state.ny.us) to rescind its 1972 and 1974 orders barring work at the 614-acre Lake Ontario Ordnance Works site. The property is the burial site of nuclear waste from the Manhattan Project dating back to World War II...Read More »

  5. Ohio Solid Waste District Reworks Funding Plans

    A new plan for the Columbiana-Carroll-Harrison (Ohio) Solid Waste Management District (www.RecyclingMakesSense.org) will make landfills the source of district funding rather than haulers. The responsibility for paying the fees used to fund the waste district would switch from the haulers to the landfills. The district charges $2.50 a ton to fund its activities. But in recent years, the amount of money generated by the fee has remained level at roughly $275,000 per year.
